In-Home Respite Care in Minneapolis, Minnesota

A break for family caregivers, while your loved one stays at home

Minnesota DHS defines respite as short-term care for a person when their primary caregiver is absent or needs relief. In-home respite is provided in the person’s own home, and can extend into the community, such as a walk, an appointment or an outing, while the person continues to live at home.

Our in-home respite caregivers step in so you can rest, work, run errands or look after your own health, knowing your loved one is safe, comfortable and keeping their usual routine in familiar surroundings. Respite can be arranged for a few hours or longer, in line with what is approved in your loved one’s support plan.

In-Home Respite Includes:

  • Personal Care – Help with bathing, dressing, grooming, and hygiene.
  • Medication Reminders – Making sure medications are taken on time.
  • Meals – Preparing nutritious meals and helping with eating if needed.
  • Companionship & Activities – Conversation, hobbies, and outings in the community.
  • Supervision & Safety – Keeping your loved one safe, including overnight when needed.
  • Light Housekeeping – Keeping living spaces tidy during the visit.

How In-Home Respite Works

We start by learning your loved one’s routines, needs, and preferences, and we coordinate with their case manager and support plan. Wherever possible, the same caregivers return each time, so your loved one sees familiar faces and you know exactly who is in your home.

Who Can Receive In-Home Respite

Respite is available through Minnesota home and community-based waiver programs, including CADI, BI, CAC, DD, the Elderly Waiver, and Alternative Care, when it is part of the person’s approved support plan. Ask your case manager, or contact us and we will help you find out whether it fits your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between in-home and out-of-home respite?

In-home respite takes place in your loved one’s own home, and in the community while they continue to live at home. Out-of-home respite takes place somewhere other than their home, such as a licensed respite setting.

How do we start respite services?

Respite needs to be part of the person’s approved waiver support plan. Your case manager can add it, or you can send us a referral and we will help coordinate the next steps.

Can in-home respite include overnight care?

Yes. When it is included in the support plan, our caregivers can stay overnight to provide supervision and support at home.
